Inlays and onlays

Inlays and onlays are ways of repairing extensively damaged and decayed teeth without fitting a crown, which replaces the whole upper portion of the tooth. Inlays are placed within the cusps (raised points or rounded edges) of the teeth, and onlays are bonded over one or more damaged cusps, covering the whole chewing surface of the tooth.

Benefits

Badly decayed and broken or chipped teeth are more than a cosmetic issue; they can negatively impact your life and the health of your teeth and gums, which in turn can lead to more serious health complications such as heart or kidney disease. Inlays and onlays are a fantastic way to achieve a winning smile while looking after your oral and general health.

Inlays and onlays are the middle ground between a tooth-coloured filling and a dental crown, able to treat relatively substantial damage while strengthening the structure of the tooth. They are much preferred to crowns, which require that much more of the existing substance of the natural tooth be filed away.

FAQ’s

Answer

Inlays and onlays are delivered using very similar procedures, requiring two trips to the dentist. During the first appointment, decay or damage is removed to prepare the tooth for its new surface. Once all damage has been removed, an impression of the prepared tooth is taken, which is used to ensure the inlay or onlay material can be cast to exactly fit. A temporary restoration is placed on the tooth to protect it while your inlay or onlay is being prepared, which can take two to three weeks.

During your second appointment, the temporary restoration is removed and the inlay or onlay is permanently attached to the tooth using special bonding cement, after which treatment is completed with a final polish of the inlay or onlay, and tooth.

Answer

  • Less of your natural tooth is removed (than when having a crown fitted) in preparation for the restoration
  • Unlike a filling, inlays and onlays strengthen the structure of the treated teeth, increasing their longevity and the force of your bite.
  • They can last for 30 years or more
  • More cosmetically appealing than a crown, which replaces more of the tooth material and is easier to detect.

Answer

Inlays and onlays are custom-made from an impression of your teeth to exactly fit into the cavity and are carefully placed and bonded by a skilled dentist, who ensures they are snug, tight, and do not interfere with your bite.

Answer

Though some clients experience a brief adjustment period, which can involve some discomfort, many adapt immediately to their new chewing surfaces. If the tissue around the restoration is sore or the tooth is temporarily sensitive, this should resolve within 1 – 2 days.

Answer

Inlays and onlays are considered a permanent restoration, lasting 30 years or more if looked after properly. All decay is removed before the impression is taken, and before the restoration is fitted your tooth is checked and cleaned once more to make sure the bond can be placed. Inlays and onlays strengthen and preserve the tooth, increasing the force of your bite and creating a lasting new structure.
